Living Cultures
About:
Centuries ago, during what is now known as the Classic period (200-900 A.D.), the Maya people created a unique and magnificent culture. Their temples, pyramids and densely populated cities, their brilliant art forms, their advanced knowledge of astronomy, as well as their writing systems were the most developed in the New World. Later, the Classic civilization collapsed, but the Maya did not disappear. In the Highlands of Chiapas, where solemn coniferous forests and transparent skies predominate you will find an area considered the cultural heart of Chiapas, when visiting it will be impossible not to fall before the beauty of its art, towns and people. Some of these communities are:
Municipality of Zinacantán
In this town you will find the Museum of Women Weavers, where some of the most common symbols in embroidery are explained, as well as greenhouses of roses, chrysanthemums and carnations, which give a beautiful color to the landscape.
Amatenango del Valle
This beautiful Tseltal town is located on a hill overlooking a fertile valley that overlooks a fertile valley covered with crops, where the use of pre-Hispanic methods in the process of making pottery persists to this day.
San Andrés Larráinzar
98% of its inhabitants belong to the Tsotsil cultural and linguistic ethnic group, which in turn is part of the Mayan culture. Here you can find handicrafts such as clothing, bags, ceramics, palm articles and wooden products.
Tenejapa, Chiapas
Due to the type of climate, wool clothing abounds here. The Tenejapaneca women are incomparable weavers; their costumes are authentic works of art, whose motifs go back to symbolisms of pre-Hispanic origin.
San Juan Chamula
Very old traditions survive here thanks to the hermeticism of one of the most peculiar communities in Mexico. This is a corner of Chiapas that must be visited with great respect.
