About:
Called "fire hill", due to the particular color that the area acquires at sunset, Tancama is the main pre-Hispanic ceremonial center of the northern region of Queretaro. Located in the municipality of Jalpan, the heart of the Sierra Gorda, this archaeological zone is made up of three main plazas, two smaller complexes, and two terraces.
The National Institute of Anthropology and History has registered 56 structures of different sizes and shapes; among them are the circular and semicircular ones; also a ball game court measuring 18 m long. In addition, the plazas are built on the same axis, in a north-south direction, and each one is located on a different level with respect to the others.
Tancama was inhabited mainly by priests, due to its ceremonial importance, since diverse vestiges of collective burials and pieces of Huastecan cultures were found, belonging to the periods that go from the year 200 to 900 AD.
This archaeological zone is located approximately 13 kilometers from the municipal capital of Jalpan and to get there you must take the federal highway that goes from Jalpan to Landa de Matamoros, turning off at Carrera de Tancama. The visitor can arrive at the site by public transportation, the road is dirt.
