Pueblos Mágicos (magical towns)

The magical towns of Yucatán are full of charm and culture. In addition, they offer different activities in their surroundings such as swimming in cenotes (sinkholes), ecotourism, adventure; as well as settings for weddings and a variety of handcrafts.

Itzamná or Zamná “Dew that descends from heaven” Located in the Haciendas and Cenotes region you will find a colonial city just 45 minutes from Mérida. Known as the “City of the 3 Cultures” because here its pre-Hispanic past converges, with its archaeological sites within the city; its colonial buildings and the current era. All under a very special characteristic: A city painted yellow. Izamal was an important Mayan religious center and today you can visit the remains of four great pyramids in the center of the city. In particular, the Kinich Kakmó pyramid, one of the most relevant. A must-see in Izamal is the Ex-Franciscan convent of “San Antonio de Padua” where you can find the second largest atrium in the world after Saint Peter’s Square in the Vatican. This impressive structure was built on the base of a pre-Hispanic pyramid. Izamal

Located in the Mundo Maya Capital Region to the east of the state, 169 km from the city of Mérida; and only 40 km from the archaeological zone of Chichen Itzá. Founded as a town by Francisco de Montejo in 1543, it is a charming colonial city that invites you to enjoy its cultural and natural riches. Merida

“Place where it all happened” Located in the region haciendas and cenotes. It is situated 100 km from the city of Merida. It is part of the route of the convents. Although there is no exact historical data of the occupation of this region, the archaeological evidence in the Xcabachen cenote and in Tipikal, it is estimated that the first settlements date from between 1000 and 400 B.C. This magical town has buildings from the colonial era. The initial buildings were in charge of Fray Juan de Merida. The convent of “San Miguel Arcángel”, is one of the main tourist attractions of this region and its importance lies in the beauty of its sacred art, from its wide façade to its open chapel and altarpiece. Yucatan has 19 archaeological sites open to the public that will undoubtedly allow you to learn more about the greatness of the Mayan civilization. Dzibichaltún, Mayapán, Xcambo, Xlapak, Sayil, Labná, are some of the sites that you can visit. We will tell you about these three:

Ek Balam

“Dark Jaguar” – “Lucero Jaguar” Located 190 km east of Mérida, Ek´Balam is a Mayan city that had its maximum development during the classical period. It was possibly the center of the “Tlalol” kingdom. Its foundation dates back to 300 B.C., until the arrival of the Spanish. It had an area of approximately 12 km2, which included a sacred space of just over 1 km2 where the elite resided, protected and bounded by 3 walls. The foundation of this city is attributed to a lord called Ek’ Balam or Coch Cal Balam, who arrived from the East and ruled for the first 40 years. It was the capital of the empire of Tah, to which the towns of the eastern part of the state paid tribute, including part of the coast, as evidenced by the shell offerings that have been found. It has 45 structures and is surrounded by two stone walls which had defensive purposes and for access control, and another one that joins the central buildings. Ek Balam

Chichén Itzá

“The city on the edge of the well of the Itzáes” Located 115 km from the city of Mérida, recognized and declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Furthermore, its Kukulkán Castle was declared one of the seven wonders of the modern world. It was one of the largest and most powerful settlements in the central-northern part of the Yucatan peninsula. Chichén Itzá had an extension of approximately 25 km2. The religious and administrative centre covered 6 km2, at a short distance the elite lived in palace-like buildings, decorated and painted in bright colours. Around these, between 50,000 and 100,000 people lived in palm-roofed palapas. The Itzaes settled in Chichén Itzá in approximately the 9th century AD, gradually forging an extensive domain whose centre was Chichén Itzá. At the end of the 10th century, the city was invaded by the Toltecs; this invasion brought a series of new cultural elements, most notably the representation of the god Kukulkan. Chichén Itzá

“The three times built” Located in the south of the state of Yucatán, 80 kilometers from the city of Mérida, it is one of the main archaeological sites in the Mayan world. Due to its importance, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The findings in this archaeological site indicates that this city was founded by the Xiues tribe, its occupation dates from the late classical period (600- 1000 AD) and had a population of approximately 20,000 inhabitants. The political and economic power was ruled by selected groups of people because they were considered intermediaries between men and the deities. Religion was a factor that allowed the leaders to monopolize the main activities. Uxmal gradually became one of the main regional capitals of the northern Maya. The livelihood of this city was maintained by the fertility of its soil for agricultural activities. One of the best trips I have had the experience to live in Mexico was at Holbox Island. Mexico Is known for its amazing beaches, and this destination is not an exception. Holbox is an Island approximately 3 hours from Cancun, where you can walk and walk inside its peaceful Caribbean sea as if you were walking in a natural pool. Being part of the Caribbean, it maintains its turquoise color, white sand and amazing climate. The experience I had the luck to live was inside its ocean. I started the morning by walking in to the ocean, I walked and walked a lot inside, getting very far away from the beach and the water only covered my legs. Once inside I started noticing a big shadow getting very close towards the place I was standing, I was too far from the beach to run or swim back, and not knowing what to do, I decided to stay still and hope it wasn’t anything dangerous. The Mérida City Council offers a free cultural activity every day of the week. The color of folklore, music, dance, the delicate craftsmanship, the memory of the historical past, the evocation of ancient customs, respect for religious tradition, the syncretism of the pre-Hispanic and European, the influence of the Caribbean, the taste for dancing and living together. Monday – Vaquería Yucateca Palacio Municipal The “Vaquería” is reminiscent of the old “town festivals” of the seventeenth century, which were held in the cattle ranches where the feast of the ironing of the cattle was framed by dances and festivities called by the owner of the farm. It is a phenomenon in which the sun illuminates the earth with the same intensity in the northern and southern hemispheres, and that happens only twice a year: on March 21st, for the beginning of spring, and on September 22nd, for fall; in both, day and night last the same time all over the world. In Mayan “Hanal” means food and “Pixán” means soul, therefore, Hanal Pixán means: “Food of the souls” The Hanal Pixán tradition belongs to the Mayan people and is celebrated throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. During these dates, family and friends who have passed away are remembered in a special way. With the passing of time, it has been adapted to the religious beliefs of the Spanish conquerors and missionaries who arrived in Yucatán, such as the establishment of the annual dates for the celebration and the realization of altars. This tradition is celebrated for 3 days: October 31st is dedicated to deceased children, November 1st is dedicated to deceased adults and on November 2nd a mass is offered in the name of all souls. During the three days altars dedicated to the deceased are offered, in which they are offered traditional food and drinks such as: Atole, mukbilpollo or “pibes”, fruits, tamales, among others.
