Toniná
About:
Located 85 kilometers from San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Toniná is a sacred space made up of an artificial mountain with seven platforms. The site is accessed through the prisoners' ball game court, one of the largest of its time, located on the great platform, where the sacrificial altar also stands. The Palace of the Underworld is hidden in the third platform, while in the fourth is the Palace of the Grecas and the War.
On the slope of the sixth platform is the mural of the Four Suns, a kind of stucco codex representing the myth of the four cosmogonic eras through which the world passes. In it, the suns of each sky are represented by falling human heads. Outstanding is the representation of the god of death holding in his hands the head of a decapitated man.
Also on the sixth platform is the Temple of the Earth Monster, with the stucco representation of the monster devouring a stone sun sphere. This temple is oriented according to the winter and spring solstices. Finally, on the seventh platform rise the temples of the Prisoners and the Smoking Mirror, the main one at the highest point of the complex, the highest in Mesoamerica. The visit to Toniná is completed with the stupendous Museum of Site inaugurated in 2000.
