The Zoque Coiteco Carnival, is famous for painting its streets with colors, with the costumes of its characters, for the excitement of its traditions and its various activities that take place. It is the most important festival, which takes place before Easter, this celebration annually receives thousands of local, national, and international tourists. The primordial element is the traditional dances and with their practice they seek to cheer up the party, to ask for rain, sun, land, and abundant harvests.
The second main dance is that of “Los enlistonados”, in them you can perceive the mixture of elements both product of the colony and the current ones, in the clothes, the masks, and the ribbons among others, as well as the sound of the musical pieces that are played with traditional and original instruments of the region “the drum and the whistle” that are translated as the beating of the heart and the whistling of the wind.
In Ocozocoautla there are other emotional festivities that can also be enjoyed, among which are: the Fair of the Virgin of Asuncion on August 15, which is the second most important festival, which begins with the pilgrimage from Ocozocoautla is characterized by a peculiar air of faith, which concludes in Ocuilapa where they patiently await the arrival of the Virgin, which is also called “La Aparecida”. The feast of the patron saint of Ocozocoautla is celebrated every June 24 with the San Juan Bautista Fair. Likewise, the San Antonio Fair is celebrated on January 17, the San Bernabé Fair on June 11 and to finish the festivities of each year, the Virgin of Guadalupe Fair is celebrated on December 12, all of these are carried out with religious and cultural activities.
The municipality also has Historical Monuments to visit such as the Church of San Juan Bautista from the XVI century, it is one of the oldest churches in the state, which still preserves its original architecture, with Mudejar style influence. The Church of San Bernabé from the XIX century, is a vernacular construction hermitage, made of adobe and with lime plaster. The Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (Church of Barrio Nuevo), from the XVII century. The Hacienda El Gavilán, from the XVI century. All of them are listed in the INAH’s catalog of historical monuments.
