Big Events in Guanajuato

The State of Guanajuato, in addition to being an important Mexican cultural and historical site, where important events in Mexican history, traditions, and customs, colonial treasures, and Magical Towns, among others, are housed.

It is also the venue for large and important national and international events, which are attended by thousands of tourists to enjoy the event in question, as well as the wonders of the host. Among the most significant events held in Guanajuato are the following:

WRC Rally Championship

The World Rally Championship is a high-speed automobile competition that takes place during March, where 24 timed sections are held on dirt roads that surround the cities of León, Guanajuato, and Silao. The Ceremonial begins in the Alhondiga de Granaditas, a route that runs through cobbled streets and emblematic tunnels of the city of Guanajuato. Locals and visitors live in the international motorsport sport that is celebrated year after year in the State of Guanajuato, a destination considered the “Capital of Rallying in North America.”

Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF)

The International Film Festival which takes place annually in July offers different venues within Guanajuato; In addition, it has the participation of Mexican and international film productions in various municipalities of the state. In the event, more than 3,500 short films, documentaries, and feature films are presented in special samples and competitions in outdoor settings or emblematic places in the state.

Harvests in Guanajuato

In the so-called “Land of wines,” the great wine event is lived, held between July and October, which offers visitors to live exceptional wine experiences in different parts of the State, such as Dolores Hidalgo CIN, San Miguel de Allende, San Felipe, San Diego de la Union, Comonfort and Silao.

Among the activities that can be carried out are grape stomping, wine tasting, appreciating live music, taking tours of the vineyards, tasting labels, participating in workshops, tasting traditional gastronomy, and blessing the harvest.

Leon Fair

The event is considered the “Best Family Fair in Mexico”, it is celebrated annually since 1876. This year, it is scheduled at the end of July with a duration of 17 days, where its 147th edition is celebrated and the arrival of more than 5 million attendees.

The 2023 edition bears the motto “A World to Discover” and has the State of Michoacán as the invited federal entity, which presents its culture, traditions, gastronomy, and crafts at different points of the event. In addition, the Fair is divided into “seven worlds”: Magical World, Shopping World, Musical World, Flavor World, Adventure World, and Tradition World.

National Holidays

In the Cradle of Mexican Independence, the Pueblo Magico Dolores Hidalgo is the host of the most anticipated national celebration and one that is experienced with greater emotion than anywhere else in Mexico.

For two weeks, a fair is held with activities such as various musical events in the Jardin Principal and the Teatro del Pueblo, craft exhibitions, sporting events, fireworks and mechanical games, and a circus, among others. Without forgetting that on September 15 the traditional Grito de Dolores takes place, where the iconic speech of the priest Miguel Hidalgo that began the Mexican Independence Fight is recreated.

Cervantine International Festival (FIC)

It is the most important cultural event of its kind in all Latin America, which offers activities in emblematic settings of the capital of the state of Guanajuato, where art, traditions, and culture from Guanajuato, Mexico, and the entire world are combined. This event has been held annually for 50 editions, celebrated during October, traditionally in each edition a country and a state of the republic are invited to present their cultural proposal at the festival.

Day of the Dead Festival

The Capital of Guanajuato keeps one of the most important traditions of Mexico alive, celebrating ours through the development of a mega festival of the Day of the Dead, which takes place at the end of October and beginning of November of each year since its foundation in 2019. On each day of the festival, a wide variety of activities, contests, and events related to the festivity can be found programmed in different points of Guanajuato, ranging from the presentation of a monumental offering, contests, workshops, alleyways, musical presentations, and live shows, night tours of local cemeteries, an exhibition of rugs made with seeds, flowers, and colored sawdust, among others.

International Hot Air Balloon Festival (FIG)

The festival is an air show held every year since 2002, currently considered one of the 3 main ballooning events worldwide, where dozens of hot air balloons rise through the sky of Leon, Guanajuato. In addition to the flight of air balloons, the festival is the stage for various singers, musical groups, and artistic shows who share their talent with the more than 400,000 visitors that this Festival receives each edition.

Jose Alfredo Jimenez International Festival

A Festival is held every year in the Pueblo Magico Dolores Hidalgo, which pays tribute to ‘El Rey,’ on the death of this legend of Mexican music. Highlighting this year, since the 50th anniversary of the death is celebrated.

The event is full of concerts, serenades, bohemians, canteen tours, photographic exhibitions, and tours to the singer-songwriter’s museum, there are gastronomic and craft samples, and many more activities.
