About:
The Sumidero Canyon is perhaps one of the most impressive attractions that Mexico treasures in Chiapas. It is a narrow strait through which the waters of the Grijalva River flow into the Gulf of Mexico, with gigantic walls or cliffs that rise more than a thousand meters above sea level. To get the full experience, it is worthwhile to see it both from above and below, from the viewpoints and also aboard a boat. Below, we tell you everything you need to know to make your visit a great experience.
To get to this place, it is best to start in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the state capital. We recommend you to spend the night here and then very early in the morning go to Chiapa de
Corzo, where you will take the tour to go through the canyon, and where you can also visit the fountain known as "La Pila", which is considered one of the most important artistic monuments in Latin America. Admire the Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzman, find living culture in the portals and craft stores, the road will guide you to the pier, where you can buy your ticket for the boat tour. They are sold by the cooperative of the region, the cost is approximately $200 pesos per person.
As you travel through the canyon by boat, the green landscape surrounds you, inviting you to open your eyes wider and look around so as not to miss a second of the moment. The sensation of feeling so small next to Mother Nature as you travel along this sort of giant artery is incredible. Eventually you will reach the canyon's gate, which appears on the state's coat of arms.
As you continue through the green waters and after observing several waterfalls, you will come across the well-known "Christmas tree", a moss formation 250 meters high that took this whimsical shape, as well as the seahorse, a stalactite that hangs from one of the canyon's large walls. The tour continues and you can admire the spider monkeys, which walk from branch to branch, among ceibas, ocotes and oaks. It is very exciting to be on the lookout for a crocodile or appreciate the birds that fly around like hawks, ducks, pelicans, herons and the occasional eagle.
