Recognized for its history, mysticism, and deep-rooted tradition of indigenous Totonac origin, Papantla is known as the “City that perfumes the World”.
The main attraction of Papantla is the Archaeological Zone “El Tajin” recognized as a World Heritage Site, which is made up of 168 buildings, the main and best known is the Pyramid of the Niches, with 365 vaults that allude to each of the days of the year. Papantla is one of the few cities in the world to have three World Heritage Sites declared by Unesco, in addition to the Archaeological Zone, the Center for Indigenous Arts (CAI) and the ritual of the Voladores are considered Intangible Cultural Heritage before the eyes of the World.
Some other attractions of this Magical Town are the Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Monument to the Volador, the Cuyuxquihui Archaeological Zone, the Insurgentes Socialistas Waterfalls, the “Talhpan” Ecological Reserve, the Kiwikgolo and Xanath Ecological Parks, the Vainillal San Lorenzo Tajin, the Mural “Homage to the Totonaca Culture”, the Municipal Palace, the Takilhsukut Park as well as the Handicraft Market.
You can also visit the museum in tribute to Teodoro Cano, one of the entity’s most prolific plastic artists. He is the heir to a pictorial tradition learned from the schools of Diego Rivera and Jose Chavez Morando, two of the key muralists of the artistic movement of the 40s in Mexico.
Papantla is rich in the diversity of gastronomic dishes, highlighting the “Zacahuil”, the bocoles, the pulakles, etc; A whole variety to pamper the palate.
Vanilla is a characteristic plant of Papantla, which aromatizes and beautifies this Magical Town, with it woven figures such as earrings and bracelets are made.
Among its traditional festivities is the “Corpus Christi Fair” and the most recognized Identity Festival “Cumbre Tajin” which disseminates, preserves, and strengthens the Totonac legacy, bringing together ancestral rituals, music, reflection, dances, healings, and multiple expressions of artistic and cultural creation.
