The most photogenic “Pueblo Mágico”
Sombrerete’s elegant colonial appearance beautifies its wavy streets, which intersect with small squares and gardens. Shortly after its foundation, this “Pueblo Mágico” became an important mining settlement producing gold, silver, lead, tin, and mercury. The exploration of its ore veins gave life to one of the most picturesque and tradition-rich villages of the New Spain, traditions which are still preserved today. Furthermore, the National Park “Sierra de Órganos” shows a unique beauty with monumental rock formations of ancient volcanic origin, eroded by water and wind.
This charming town was founded in 1555, it has an elegant colonial style physiognomy which beautifies its winding streets, interrupted by small squares and gardens. It is a mining town that produces gold, silver, lead, tin and mercury. With the exploitation of its veins it gave birth to one of the most picturesque and rich in tradition towns.
The name “Sombrerete” was given thanks to a group of Spaniards who found a silver deposit and decided to settle there. When they looked at a nearby hill they exclaimed “Look at it, it looks like our hats” and that’s how the town got its name.

– Gastronomy
The typical dishes that we find in the region are the “birria” of lamb and goat and the famous “brujitas” which are made from a dough in which nixtamal flour, garlic and salt are mixed, filled with shredded or stewed meat, fried to a krispy consistency accompanied by sauce and pot beans.
